Last week, a new report was released by the Planetary Security Initiative (PSI), a multi-organization consortium including the Center for Climate and Security, and coordinated by the Netherlands’ Clingendael Institute. The report, titled Action on Climate and Security Risks, reviews global progress made to date on addressing the security implications of a changing climate. The review includes both significant concerns, and reasons for optimism. From the announcement:

“The scan of the 2017 horizon shows that climate fragility risks persist and are worsening.”

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. As the report highlights, institutions at the international, national and sub-national level have been pressing forward. This includes a maintenance of policies addressing the security risks of climate change at the U.S. Department of Defense (despite prevailing political winds), as well as attention to climate change risks in the EU’s Global Resilience Strategy, a UN Security Council Resolution on Lake Chad, the Australian Senate, and the U.S. Congress.

The report was co-written by the PSI’s Janani Vivekananda and Susanne Wolfmaier (adelphi), Shiloh Fetzek (the Center for Climate and Security), and Malin Mobjörk and Amiera Sawas (Sipri).

The report will be formally launched on Dec 12-13 at the 2017 Planetary Security Conference in the Hague, supported by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
