National Security Advisor Rice: America’s Future in Asia and the Transcendent Role of Climate Change
On Nov. 20th, U.S. National Security Advisor Ambassador Susan Rice gave a speech to a crowd at Georgetown University on the future of U.S. policy in the Asia-Pacific region. Ambassador Rice noted that “Nowhere are the challenges and the opportunities we face so great as in the Asia Pacific region…” and that “rebalancing toward the Asia Pacific remains a cornerstone of the Obama Administration’s foreign policy.” (more…)
Australia: A Climate Change Bellwether?
A 2012 report, Climate Change & International Security: The Arctic as a Bellwether, from the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), proposed that climatic and geopolitical trends in the Arctic region might be a signal of what is to come for the rest of the globe.
A recent article by Matt Siegel, Is Australia the Face of Climate Change to Come?, offers up a similar set of questions as the C2ES report, but for a very different geography. Instead of melting ice caps, Siegel points out the emerging trends in Australia for excruciating heat waves and devastating floods. Admiral Locklear’s Testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee
On April 9th, Admiral Samuel Locklear III, Commander of U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM), gave testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee regarding the role of U.S. Pacific Command “in review of the defense authorization request for fiscal year 2014, and the Future Years Defense program.” In response to a question from Senator Inhofe regarding recent statements made by the Admiral on the security threat of climate change in the Asia-Pacific region, Admiral Locklear reaffirmed the importance of the issue from U.S.PACOM’s perspective. South Korea’s Vice Foreign Minister: Climate Change A Security Risk
Yonhap News Agency recently reported the remarks of South Korea’s Second Vice Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul regarding the security risks of climate change. The minister provided important commentary on both security risks, as well as the need for a more holistic partnership approach to tackling climatic risks in the Asia-Pacific region. The minister’s remarks were focused mostly on the Asia-Pacific region, but Cho Tae-yul has also spoken about the role of climatic factors in the Arctic, and expressed interest in Arctic Council membership for South Korea.
