Event: The Story Behind Climate Security and What it Means for US Foreign Policy
Join the Center for Climate & Security, in partnership with the Wilson Center, on October 1 from 10:30 am – 12:00 pm EST for a dialogue with climate security pioneer and Council on Strategic Risks Board Chair Hon. Sherri Goodman, environmental journalist and CCS journalist in residence Peter Schwartzstein, Middle East expert Merissa Khurma, and Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations, Anne Witkowsky.
They will unpack the impact of climate change on security risks around the globe, the evolution of US engagement on climate security, and opportunities to strengthen stability and build cooperation through climate action. The discussion will feature insights from Goodman and Schwartzstein’s new books, respectively: Threat Multiplier: Climate, Military Leadership, and the Fight for Global Security and The Heat and the Fury: On the Frontlines of Climate Violence.

Nexus25 Project Releases Climate Security Policy Briefs & Analysis
This past month, the Nexus25 Project, a joint Center for Climate and Security-Istituto Affari Internazionali initiative, released a set of products in partnership with its global collaborators focused on debriefing recent events in the climate security space. This includes:
- A new Reshaping Multilateralism podcast episode focusing on the EU elections and the future of European climate policy, featuring:
- Mr. Tony Agatha, the EU’s Principal Advisor on Climate Diplomacy;
- Dr. Ricardo Borges de Castro, a Senior Advisor to the European Policy Centre;
- Dr. Heather Grabbe, a senior fellow at Bruegel.
- “The G7, South Africa and the Sustainable Climate Agenda for Africa,” a commentary reflecting on South Africa’s ongoing G7 presidency from the team at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA);
- “Climate Security at NATO: Looking Beyond Today’s Wars,” a reflection on the NATO Summit from Dr. Louise van Schaik, the head of the EU and Global Affairs Unit at the Netherlands’ Clingendael Institute;
- A policy brief offering a preview of the upcoming UN Summit from the Future from Nexus25 contributor, Thin Lei Win.

Reshaping Multilateralism Episode 3: Europe’s Climate Inflection Point

Trip Report: Youth-Led Visions of a Climate-Secure Pacific
Climate change increasingly risks Pacific security and sovereignty on land and sea due to sea level rise, a warming ocean, disaster, and displacement. These challenges are no longer the problems of the future– they are some of the largest risks of today. Addressing these challenges requires understanding and partnership between the leaders of today and tomorrow. In building toward a better future, the Center for Climate and Security (CCS), with support from the US Mission to New Zealand, launched the Youth-Led Visions of a Climate-Secure Pacific program, the second iteration of a young leaders program that started in 2023 with a NATO-focused cohort.

CCS selected seven young leaders for the program, based on their visions of a climate-secure Pacific shared in the video below. These included Hailey Campbell (United States), Michael Chapman (United States), Liam Clegg (Cook Islands/ Australia), Kalita Titi Homasi (New Zealand/ Tuvalu), Conrad Johnie Ikaika Morgan (United States), Georgia Nichols (United States), and Silas Zhang (New Zealand).
