The Center for Climate and Security Joins Nexus25 Project as it Launches Phase 2, Hosts MSC Side Event

By Siena Cicarelli

On February 16, 2024, the Nexus25 project organized an official side event at the Munich Security Conference, marking the official launch of Phase 2 of the project. The discussion, co-hosted with the UN World Food Programme (WFP), brought together leaders from government, multilateral organizations, civil society, security institutions and the private sector to discuss the links between hunger, climate and sustainable security.

Nexus25 is a joint initiative of the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) and the Center for Climate and Security (CCS), and is funded by Stiftung Mercator. The project centers on the study of nexus challenges – complex and interrelated issues like migration, climate change, food security and more. The team’s research supports sustainable multilateralism, particularly how the international community can develop a comprehensive understanding of these complex crises, break down silos in their work, and better integrate local voices into policymaking. In the first phase of Nexus25 (2021-2023), the team developed in-depth case studies of nexus challenges in the Sahel and South Asia, hosting events and conducting interviews with both transatlantic and regional experts to inform their research.

In late 2023, CCS joined as a partner for the project’s second phase (2024-2026). Over the next two years, the Nexus25 team will be focusing on tangible solutions for development practitioners, diplomats and security actors alike – with an emphasis on fighting hunger, mobilizing climate finance, and supporting local resilience. The team’s ongoing research efforts will be paired with side events at the upcoming World Bank Spring Meetings and an October 2024 conference, as well as the launch of a new podcast highlighting the expertise of Nexus25 partners across the globe.

A summary of the Nexus25 side event “Sustainable Security in a Hot and Hungry World” can be found on the redesigned website here.
