Read, Watch, Listen: CCS Across the Web | April 2022

Welcome to “Read, Watch, Listen” from the Center for Climate and Security (CCS), a monthly round-up highlighting some of the articles, interviews, and podcasts featuring the CCS network of experts.  

In April, CCS experts were called upon to discuss a multiplicity of topics, including wargames in the Arctic, water diplomacy in the Middle East, the impact of climate change on the U.S. National Guard, and the conflict in Ukraine.

Books

  • CCS Senior Research Fellow Josh Busby published States and Nature: The Effects of Climate Change on Security which examines how state capacity, political exclusion, and international assistance shape climate security outcomes. This argument is then demonstrated through application to case studies from sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia.

Articles

  • Sherri Goodman pointed out the importance of climate and water security cooperation in light of the new water-for-energy deal between Jordan and Israel. (Friedrich Naumann Foundation)
  • Erin Sikorsky noted that threats from climate change, such as a longer fire season and more intense fires, will put increased pressure on the National Guard as a key responder. (Task & Purpose)

  • Francesco Femia joined Raul Cazan to discuss Russia’s actions in Ukraine and the implications for future climate security. (2°C Podcast)
  • Goodman spoke on All Things Considered about a NATO wargame in the Arctic, and the implications of further warming on geopolitics in the region. (NPR)
  • Sikorsky discussed the events in Ukraine with Natalie Orpett of Lawfare, including the ways the conflict is exposing and exacerbating threats to energy and climate security. (Lawfare Podcast)

  • Peter Schwartzstein, CCS Journalist in Residence, participated in a panel on the importance of journalists covering climate security. (International Journalism Festival)
  • Goodman gave the 2022 Nancy Weiser Ignatius Lecture on the Environment for the School of International Service. (American University)
