UK to Integrate Climate Change Into Military Planning
UK Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Edward Davey, announced at a Green Growth Summit at the European Parliament in Brussels that the UK would be integrating climate risks into its military planning, stating that:

Rear Admiral Neil Morisetti to the EU: “Failure to set a robust 2030 climate target will hurt our national security”
For almost a decade, Royal Navy Rear Admiral Neil Morisetti has been an intelligent and measured public voice for action on addressing the national security implications of a changing climate. In addition to his former roles as the UK’s Special Representative for Climate Change, and before that, the UK’s Climate and Energy Security Envoy, he helped found the Global Military Advisory Council on Climate Change, a group of serving and retired military officers “committed to stressing their concerns about the security implications of climate change and to promoting a positive role of the military worldwide to help address the challenge of climate change.” In this context, his warnings should be taken seriously. From Floods to Drought: Preparing for erratic climate risks
We know that climat
e change will bring more frequent and intense extreme weather events. Less discussed is the likelihood that very different types of extreme events, sometimes within a very short span of time, are increasingly likely to occur in the same place. In particular, widely varying water-related events – whether there is too much water or not enough, could become a destructive, see-sawing norm. Below is a look at three locations around the world currently making headlines for having to manage both drought and flood extremes, all in a very short period of time. (more…)
Gut Punch Resiliency: Bouncing Back from Extreme Climatic Events
In light of the numerous record-breaking droughts, floods and extreme weather events that have filled headlines this past year, we’d like focus briefly on the issue of “resiliency.” This oft-mentioned term is lucidly defined by Col. Mark Mykleby, USMC (ret.) as “the capacity to take a gut punch and come back swinging.” In other words, resiliency is not simply about the ability to withstand one event, but also the ability to bounce back after the event, and be prepared to weather another.
