Twitter Climate Security Diplomacy
It is not news that Twitter, for better or worse, has reached a new level of prominence in the political dialogue. As part of this new landscape, The Atlantic Council hosted a virtual “Twitter Town Hall on Nordic Contributions to Global Security” where people could submit questions directly to five Nordic country ambassadors to the US: Karin Olfsdotter of Sweden, Geir H. Haarde of Iceland, Kåre R. Aas of Norwary, Lars Gert Lose of Denmark, and Kirsti Kauppi of Finland. The Center for Climate and Security took the opportunity to ask the ambassadors a question on climate and security (naturally), and the ambassadors responded. Watch: Norway’s Chief of Defense on the Changing Arctic Climate and Security

Defense News’ Vago Muradian sat down with Norway’s chief of defense, Adm. Haakon Bruun-Hansen, to discuss how the changing climate in the Arctic is impacting strategic decisions, and the growing importance of conflict prevention. Adm. Bruun-Hansen emphasized that climate change is playing a significant role in shaping relations with, among other nations, Russia, and that it will continue to factor into operations in the high north.

Secretary Clinton Tours the Arctic
Secretary Clinton is touring the Arctic Circle, signalling how important this region is becoming to the United States as ice melts, and sea lanes open up. New Report – Climate Change & International Security: The Arctic as a Bellwether
Last week, C2ES released a report titled Climate Change & International Security: The Arctic as a Bellwether. The report highlights the role that climate change in the Arctic plays in shaping the geopolitics of the post-Cold War world. The authors note that climatic shifts and subsequent shifts in the geopolitics of the Arctic demonstrate the importance of the linkages between climate change, energy security and economic stability.
