Giving Tuesday and CSR Successes in 2023
Friends and Colleagues,
At the Council on Strategic Risks (CSR), we have continued to expand our activities, our team, and our impact through 2023. Today, I’d like to share some of our accomplishments with you—and thank you, our supporters, networks, and participants in our efforts. Here are just a few of CSR’s 2023 highlights:
Creating New Tools to Help Understand & Address Systemic Global Risks. In June, CSR’s Center for Climate and Security (CCS) launched its Military Responses to Climate Hazards (MiRCH) Tracker, a first-of-its-kind effort to quantitatively track and qualitatively understand the security implications of the growing demand for military humanitarian assistance and disaster relief around the globe. Meanwhile, in September CCS launched two interactive reports that help visualize climate security impacts in Turkey and Iran, continuing an innovative partnership with the Woodwell Climate Research Center, and briefed key Executive Branch officials and bipartisan Congressional staff on the findings.
In September, CSR’s Nolan Center on Strategic Weapons launched the CSR Biodefense Scorecard through which we track where stronger policy development is occurring or lagging, and highlight markers of policy implementation. In the coming weeks, the Nolan Center will release two additional open-access tools: a biodefense budget tracker to serve as a companion to the Scorecard; and The Nuclear Weapon Systems Project, a qualitative approach to portray data and visualize how the types of nuclear capabilities fielded in the world have evolved since the advent of these weapons.
(more…)RELEASE: The Council on Strategic Risks Selects Erin Sikorsky as New Director of the Center for Climate and Security, and John Conger as Senior Advisor
September 1, 2021 — Today the Council on Strategic Risks (CSR) announced it has selected Erin Sikorsky as its new Director of the Center for Climate and Security (CCS). Ms. Sikorsky previously served as the CCS Deputy Director. The previous Director of CCS, the Honorable John Conger, will now be a Senior Advisor across CSR’s programs and Director Emeritus of CCS.
“As we’ve seen repeatedly this summer, no corner of the world is safe from climate change-driven hazards. In 2021 alone, these hazards have taken thousands of lives and done millions of dollars of damage to critical infrastructure,” said Sikorsky. “Beyond these first order impacts, however, are a series of more complex security concerns that arise as climate change compounds other risks — including extremism, poor governance and corruption, rising inequality and state fragility, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and other health security risks. As more and more governments come to grips with this reality, the Center for Climate and Security has the expertise, diverse network, and silo-busting approach needed to analyze these risks and lead action to identify and implement climate security solutions. I’m honored to step into this leadership role and continue the organization’s ground-breaking work.”
(more…)This Month, Meet the CSR Women Making History
As Women’s History Month draws to a close, we are excited to highlight the women across the Council on Strategic Risks (CSR) who are leading and shaping all of our organizations components: the Center for Climate and Security (CCS), the Converging Risks Lab (CRL), and the Janne E. Nolan Center on Strategic Weapons (the Nolan Center).
First, we must recognize that the Council on Strategic Risks would not be what it is today without the immense and irreplaceable support of founding board member, the late Dr. Janne E. Nolan. She had a long career as an author and a dedicated public servant, working across the State Department, the Senate Armed Services Committee, and as the defense advisor to several presidential campaigns and transition teams among numerous other positions. Her work continued into nonprofits and academia as she pioneered nuclear security affairs and practical, non-partisan solutions for anticipating, analyzing and addressing systemic risks to security. CSR’s CEO Christine Parthemore penned a blog post earlier this month about how this organization—and the entire field of national security—would not be what they are today without Janne’s leadership and contributions.
The depth of talent across CSR cannot be overstated. The women on our Board and our core teams have trailblazed their way through security and scientific spaces, and worked tirelessly to push boundaries and build new career fields for others. Many have served as the cornerstones of growth and progress in their fields, and continue to build on those foundations and advance solutions to nuclear, climate, environmental, and biological threats and beyond.
