RELEASE: Bipartisan Military, Political and City Leaders Talk Climate Change Risks and Opportunities in San Diego
Event brings US and Asia-Pacific perspective on building U.S. military and community resilience to climate change
San Diego, CA – Republican Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Democratic Congressman Scott Peters, military experts who served in both Republican and Democratic administrations, and community leaders from the San Diego area, are gathering at the Veterans Museum at Balboa Park in San Diego to discuss existing and future national security risks from climate change, and outline opportunities for Asia-Pacific cooperation on the issue at a daylong summit on Tuesday, February 21. The Center for Climate and Security, with support from The San Diego Foundation and the Skoll Global Threats Fund, are hosting the forum to inform policy responses to climate risks that will benefit both military and civilian communities, at home and in the broader Asia-Pacific region. Bipartisan Defense and Diplomacy Leaders Issue Statement on Climate and National Security
A bipartisan group of defense and diplomacy leaders issued a statement today affirming that U.S. national security demands action on climate change. The statement includes over 45 signatories including three former Secretaries of Defense, Leon Panetta, Chuck Hagel, and William Cohen, two former Secretaries of State, Madeline Albright and George Shultz, former CIA director Jim Woolsey, former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger, and a number of senior retired military leaders including Admiral Samuel Locklear III, General Anthony Zinni and General Ron Keys, among other senior leaders. This past Friday, March 8, the Partnership for a Secure America hosted a discussion on Capitol Hill with George Shultz, former Secretary of State under President Ronald Reagan and one of 38 distinguished signatories of a bi-partisan statement on climate change and security. It was a fascinating discussion, and included some great insights from the former Secretary.
