• A few quick tweets about the brewing food crisis in Sudan. Quietly & away from the news, farming is crumbling. Crop production is down up to 80% this yr in some of the country, as poor rains, a fuel crisis + the collapsing currency, which has made inputs too expensive, bite. 1/ Many farmers are ditching their land & heading to Khartoum. Last wk I visited villages that had lost 40% of their pop since 2015. The crisis has been compounded by a total lack of gov support or policy. Sudan has had 4 ag ministers since 2016. 2/ Unsurprisingly, food prices have soared bc of collapsing local production & higher import costs. Crop staples, like sorghum, have more than doubled in price since Jan. Even the middle class sometimes struggle to buy fruit & veg. Anger is building, and while it hasn’t really exploded yet, ‘land grabs’ from the Gulf are pushing some ppl over the edge.
